What is the Toys for Tots Foundation?

Toys for Tots is an IRS recognized 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit charity managed by the Marine Corps. The Toys for Tots headquarters is in the Cooper Center. The headquarters is located just outside the Main Gate of Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia. That’s about 35 miles south of Washington, DC.

Toys for Tots collects toys annually in over 800 communities. In particular, it covers all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Furthermore, the campaigns typically begin in October and last until mid to late December. This is also the time of year when distribution takes place.

A Brief History about Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots began in 1947 by Major Bill, a Marine Corps Reserve, and his wife, Diane. Specifically, Diane designed handcrafted dolls and asked her husband to start an organization that accepts toys for underprivileged children. As a result of their efforts, toy donations reached five thousand that year by the LA Marines reserve unit.

By 1948, all Marine Reserve Sites implemented a Toys for Tots campaign making it an official national community action program. Major Bill knew he would need to advertise his campaign. Lucky for him, Major Bill was a personal friend of Walt Disney. Surely, Major Bill asked Disney to design the very first campaign poster. His design gave creation to the iconic three-car train. Crystal Cleaning took some creative liberty and added the diamond logo to show their support!

Later, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation formed what is now the official not-for-profit charity in 1991. To this day, the Marine Corps help run and support the Marine Toys for Tots Program.

Toys for Tots Today

There’s a lot that goes into collecting toys for children. Therefore, the Toys for Tots Foundation has established the following responsibilities to get as many toys as possible:

  • raise funds
  • purchase toys
  • provide promotional and support materials
  • manage all funds raised and donated
  • solicit corporate support
  • educate the public
  • handle day-to-day operations

Above all, the Marine Toys for Tots Program distributes an average of 18 million toys to 7 million less fortunate children annually.

Crystal Cleaning & The Toys for Tots Holiday Recognition Program

Local business leaders, like Daniel of Crystal Cleaning, play a critical role in the Toys for Tots campaign process. This year, Crystal Cleaning Janitorial Services is participating in the Toys for Tots Holiday Recognition Program. As a result, members of the community, like yourself, drop new, unwrapped toys in collection boxes. These boxes are usually positioned in local businesses, but in this case, it’s Daniel’s pick-up truck.

It’s not too late to schedule a location and time before December 18th. Surely, Daniel will come to pick up the toy you’d like to donate to Toys for Tots!
