7 Easy Summer Cleaning Tips

The spring season is typically associated with cleaning, but that doesn’t mean your household chores end when summer rolls around. The Tampa Bay heat, humidity, mold, and rain can take a toll on your home, which is why keeping clean is so crucial in the summer! Follow these 7 easy summer cleaning tips to keep your home tidy and fresh all season long!

1. Odors-be-Gone!

Trash never smells good, but it can start to smell notably bad during the summer season. This issue occurs because heat and humidity create the perfect environment for bacteria growth, making the unpleasant smell inside your trash cans. The problem becomes even worse when the humid summer air captures these bad smells and keeps them around for longer than usual.

Prevent this smelly problem by sprinkling baking soda in the bottom of your trash cans. Baking soda will absorb the foul odors from the trash can to prevent your home from smelling bad and ruining your summer.

2. Dust it Off!

If you let the sunshine through your windows, it will fill your home with beautiful, natural light. But, unfortunately, it can also fill your home with dust! Being around dust can trigger an allergic reaction, which can prevent you from enjoying the summer. To avoid this problem, make an effort to dust more regularly during the summer.

3. Mildew and Mold Prevention!

Mold and mildew grow faster in humid summer weather, especially in areas of your home that are already humid, such as the washing machine. Keep mold and mildew out of your laundry room by leaving the washing machine door open when it is not in use. This habit will dry out the machine and lower humidity, so mold and mildew do not grow.

4. Water Ring Removal

Did someone forget to use a coaster? Don’t panic if you see a white-colored water ring on your wood furniture. Instead, lay a cotton towel, cloth, or t-shirt on the spot and grab an iron from your laundry room. Empty the water from the iron, then plug it in and allow it to heat up. Next, place the iron on top of the cotton fabric for a few seconds before removing it. If the ring is still visible, repeat this process as often as needed until it has disappeared.

5. Essential Oils Are Essential!

If you’re planning on having company, it’s essential to keep your bathroom smelling fresh at all times. Skip the strong air fresheners and use non-toxic essential oils instead. Be sure to read about the benefits of each scent before choosing one for your home. For example, lavender essential oil promotes relaxation, whereas lemongrass essential oil purifies the air. Keep these benefits in mind when deciding which scent is suitable for your home. Combining oils can also be fun, so choose smells that go well together to get multiple effects.

6. Microwave Makeover

Do you use the microwave to heat snacks all summer long? While you may devour the snacks, the smells can linger around inside the microwave for weeks. But, there is a quick and easy trick to keep the microwave clean!

Start by slicing a lemon in half and place both halves in a small bowl filled with water. Next, place the bowl in the microwave and heat it for three minutes. The zesty smell of the lemon will mask the odors inside your microwave. Then, toss the lemon into the garbage disposal so it can freshen up your drain as well! (Note: While this is fine for healthy for newer garbage disposals, older disposals might not be able to handle a large chunk of lemon peel!)
